3 Outfits, 3 Personalities – Plus Size Style

Tara Jane Style Plus Size Fashion Female Empowerment

This year I started a new “series” for lack of a better word where I am featuring outfits inspired by women I follow on Instagram. I did this for a few reasons:

  1. I thought this would be a fantastic way to restyle pieces in my wardrobe to get excited about them again.
  2. I really want to find ways to elevate and support other women this year. Being a woman in America is unfair and unjust with so many of our rights being systematically stripped from us and we need to support and elevate one another and fight against the toxically ingrained need to compete.
    • 2B. One of the things about social media, in general, that really bothers me is that many creators are inspired by outfits or reel ideas that someone else has posted and due to the pressure to stand out and “be worth following” creators don’t acknowledge their inspiration as an attempt to make it seem more “authentically them.” It’s totally unnecessary. There is room for everyone to succeed. This is me practicing what I preach.

The three outfits below are all inspired by three very different personalities with different styles, but that defines me – I do have a safe space which is sort of hipster Minnesota casual haha, but I also LOVE to push the boundary of my own comfort levels and try different things.

Shop the looks on my LTK.it and I’ll also link out to the profiles of the three women who inspired me so you can go give them a follow as well!

Outfit 1: Alternative Fashion

This outfit was inspired by Lily Melrose (@llymlrs). I love her style because it’s usually made up of closet staple basics, and it’s the moody black color palette I gravitate towards. This outfit is so easy to just throw on and go, but looks stylish and like I spent a significant amount of time on it…win.

Outfit 2: Confident & Sexy

This outfit was inspired by Shayna Moretti (@shaynaslife). I’ve been following Shayna for years and seen her style evolve as she’s gotten more comfortable in her body, which is why I really wanted to try out this outfit, which is very not “me.”

A year ago I went on a self love journey with my arms, because they were one of my biggest insecurity zones. After a full year of intentionally wearing outfits where they were exposed I can confidently say that I don’t even think about how they look 95% of the time. After that success, it felt like time to move onto my next insecurity zone: my midriff.

The internet isn’t all angles all the time so I have had some people tell me I’m not “plus size,” which is actually just as shitty as being told you’re fat, because again, it’s someone complaining about how you view your own body. But that’s also why I decided that to fully embrace my midriff, I have to actually embrace it from all angles and not just the “flattering” ones. This outfit makes me feel uncomfortable, yes, but it also makes me feel attractive and I want my confidence to be how I judge an oufit, not someone else’s opinion.

Outfit 3: Street Wear

This outfit was inspired mostly by Sammi (@sammijefcoate). I say “mostly” because she is alt royalty and incorporates vibrant colors and beautifully layered accessories and that’s not really my aesthetic. So staying true to the challenge of restyling items already in my closet I did take the silhouette she had and threw on a baseball hat instead to make it more curvy street style.
