My wardrobe is full of black clothes. In the words of Gareth Pugh, “I think in black.” 🖤
I heard this audio on Instagram talking about how black IS colorful, because there are so many varients and I very much agree, even if it was tongue in cheek, so I put together 6 looks below using only a fraction of my black clothing 😬 (true story).
Outfit 1: Night Out
This dress on it’s own is fantastic, but to help transition it to a colder night, I threw on a jacket.

Dress: Target A New Day Sleeveless Tie-back Dress
Size: XXL
Vegan Leather Jacket: Express – Old
Similar Looks:
Sandals: Torrid – Old
Similar Shoes:
Purse: Kate Spade Clutch
*I love this clutch and think it’s a great/affordable investment piece. It’s large enough to fit my credit card/cash/ID, my phone and a lipgloss or a tampon. Plus the wrist strap is key for me.
Outfit 2: Quirky Schoolteacher
I’m at a loss for what to label this outfit haha but basically, how do you make a skeleton or (for lack of a better word) “gothic” type piece more mainstream.

Dress: Target A New Day Sleeveless Ballet Dress
Size: XXL
Sweater: SheIn Men Skeleton Pattern Button Through Cardigan
Size: XL
*Here are images of the side and back:

Shoes: Torrid Twist Braid Loafers
Size: 10.5W
Purse: Kate Spade – I got mine at the outlet, but here is a similar one
Necklace: Etsy Lost Apostle Anatomical Heart
*I got the 30″ Chain

Outfit 3: Vintage
I’m obsessed with this outfit. I think it’s classy and timeless, yet still has an edge to it that makes me feel like a boss.

Skirt: Pleather pleated midi skirt, old from Asos
Here are some similar types

Shirt: Modcloth – Old (Brand was Ellison)
Similar Looks:
- Eloquii Tie Neck Blouse (I have a few of theirs)
- Lily Silk
- ASOS
Flats: Lulu’s Sling Back Flats
Purse: Kate Spade Clutch
*same as featured above
Outfit 4: Rocker Street Style
This outfit is the most everyday me. There have been times where I’ve purposely bought a sweatershirt or shirt in my fiance’s size that I like so that I can claim it’s for him, but then can wear it, too haha (that’s a pro tip for you plus size ladies out there!)

Jacket: Bought this black denim coat at Kohl’s in the guys section last year on super sale.
Here are some similar types
Shirt: Modcloth (I think?) – Old
Great places for graphic tees
Leggings: Old Navy
*I love the sheen on these. Give the illusion of being pleather. Another great legging like this if from Walmart
- Walmart Free Assembly
- Other Old Navy Option with a more faux leather appearance
Boots: Dr. Marten’s – I get that these may be considered pricey, but I’m not going to link to alternatives, because I’m a Doc’s purist and think they’re a wardrobe staple and worth the investment.
Outfit 5: Summer to Fall
I’ve always loved outfits on other people where they wear tights under their shorts and I am loving this vibe (and ignoring my sister’s opinion about it haha).

Sweater: Old ASOS
Here are some other options
Shorts: Old ASOS
Great places for shorts
- Old Navy Shorts – I get the 5″ length
Tights: H&M Plus Size 2 Pack
Size: 2XL
Boots: Tom’s Marina Boot (I have this heeled boot in black and beige)
Other Tom’s Boots I own/love
- Dakota Boot – water resistant (I have these in black, beige, and green…when you find a good boot you love, I say it’s worth the investment!)
Outfit 6: Loungewear to the Office
Are you headed to bed? Are you headed to the boardroom? Keep them guessing with this pajama-ish top and black skinny pants haha

Shirt: ASOS Misguided Plus Satin Shirt – Sold Out
Here are some other options
- Banana Republic Satin Shirt (I do XXL)
- ASOS – Men’s Shirt (I would probably do an XXL in mens because of my hips)
Pants: Express
Size: 18
Flats: Lulu’s Sling Back Flats – same as above
Let me know which of these looks you’d wear!
XO, Tara Jane
